KC CREW Members Volunteer with the
Kansas City Habitat for Humanity!

The Habitat for Humanity builds, on average, 10 homes in the Kansas City area per year. Helping Kansas City families in need, the Habitat for Humanity Kansas City works in partnership with God’s people to bring together families and communities in need with volunteers and resources necessary to build decent and affordable housing. The Habitat for Humanity program is a non-profit, interfaith (non-denominational) ministry dedicated to eliminating impoverished housing. Its ministries reach all 50 states (including over 1,400 communities) and more than 80 countries around the world. Habitat for Humanity carries out its mission at the community level through organized groups called affiliates.

Come rain or shine, the KC CREW members volunteered at the Habitat site on September 21, 2006. The house KC CREW volunteers worked on contained 3 bedrooms with 2 baths and totaled 1,200 square feet of living space including an unfinished basement. Due to rainy weather conditions, the KC CREW volunteers were put to work inside hanging sheetrock. Pictured here; Alissa Masoner with INTRUST Bank, Carrie Stull with Terracon and Celia Richey with ARCap, take a minute to talk about the lending differences between a Community Bank and a REIT. The environment gave us a good opportunity to network as well.

Lunch was provided by INTRUST Bank and Terracon provided drinks throughout the day.  After lunch, Celia Richey with ARCap and Julie Headley with Thellman Financial cut sheetrock to finish the ceiling in the master bathroom. The day went by fast and we learned more about Habitat as well as the strengths of each other. The recipients of the Habitat home are required to work a certain number of hours as sweat equity. The new homeowners will receive an interest free loan and are not allowed to sell the house during the first five years of occupancy.  If the homeowner wants to sell the house then Habitat for Humanity may exercise its right of first refusal to buy it back.

Amanda Whiteford with Terracon and Alissa Masoner measure and hang greenboard for the master bathroom.  KC CREW volunteers came away with the knowledge of a new trade and the fulfillment gained through the gift of giving.  Most of us get busy with scheduling time for different events like vacations and holidays, so don’t forget to schedule time for community service too!

COME JOIN THE FUN…

The next opportunity to volunteer is for the Women Build 2007 – “Green Project”.  The project is classified as a “Women Build” which means that the construction of the house will be completed mostly by women. The “Green” classification relates to the materials being used will be environmental friendly as well as energy efficient. Habitat for Humanity is currently in the process of raising funds for this project and is expecting construction to begin in the Spring 2007. As soon as the dates for construction have been established there will be sign up sheets available.

No construction knowledge or skills are necessary. If you are interested in participating this coming spring, please contact Alissa Masoner at 785-830-2628 or email her at alissa.masoner@intrustbank.com.  Let’s show Kansas City that The KC CREW is a can do crew!!
