TEAM KC CREW FOR THE CURE

Team KC CREW for the Cure completed its first 5K Race for the Cure on Sunday, August 9. Team members included Celia Richey, Lindsay Moores, Jill McCarthy, Brenda McCoskey, Jennifer Gach, Pat Soptic, Emilia Snively, and Julie Headley. All of the team got up very early to arrive at Union Station by 7 am and walked in the 5K run/walk.

Our team was one of the smallest participating teams but Team KC CREW for the Cure raised over $1,800!

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, Komen has invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill the promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.

The Komen Greater Kansas City Affiliate is one of over a hundred global Komen affiliates. Since 1993, Komen Kansas City has granted $5.3 million into the Greater Kansas City area for breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs. Komen Kansas City has also funded over $1.6 million for national breast cancer research. With nearly over 28,500 participants, $1.2 million was raised in the 2009 Komen Kansas City Race for the Cure, 75% of which will stay in Greater Kansas City and 25% of which will go to Komen for the Cure for research.

Save the date for next year’s Race when Team KC CREW for the Cure will walk again!
