HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Habitat for Humanity Kansas City brings resources to people in need in order to build decent, affordable homes. These houses are sold to those in need at no profit. Founded in 1979, it is the seventh oldest affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat Kansas City has built more than 200 houses in the Ivanhoe and Center City neighborhoods of Kansas City Missouri and continues to revitalize blighted urban neighborhoods and instill a sense of pride and hope in our inner-city communities.

During the year, the KC CREW Community Service Committee works with the KC Habitat for Humanity office to obtain opportunities to offer volunteer services. The projects and number of days vary depending on the resources and personnel available to Habitat for Humanity. KC CREW commits a minimum of 15 people a day as project volunteers. There are several factors determining the type of work we do. Early stages of a project might include framing and sheet rock while the later stages could include painting and landscaping. The type of work is decided on the day you arrive and varies depending on how much was accomplished on the house prior to your arrival date. As volunteers we find out the morning of our volunteer day the location of the house and the type of work we will be doing. There are no construction skills required to be a volunteer.

On Saturday, October 25th, 2008, KC CREW Volunteers painted the interior of a Habitat house. KC CREW worked along with a team of volunteers from Wells Fargo at the Habitat site. The weather was perfect-not too cold and not too hot. The sun was out which made the work that much more fun.

KC CREW Volunteers include (back row) Bill Stafford, Julie Headley, Janet Kennedy, Celia Richey, Marcia Charney, (front row) Lindsay Moores, Monica Hein, Erin Wyatt, Kenya Porter and Alissa Masoner.

The Habitat Project Manager commented on our group’s willingness to pitch in and help whenever needed. There were networking opportunities as well as just plain fun. The day was a success and everyone went away with a feeling of accomplishment.

Habitat for Humanity Kansas City is celebrating 30 years of service to the community and they want you to be part of the yearlong celebration. There are plans developing for a “Women Build” project. 2009 is gearing up to be a very exciting year!
